IFA 2018 results: the world's first 7nm system on a chip, sliders, Nubia a wearable smartphone, and more

IFA is an annual consumer electronics show, so it often shows a lot more than just new smartphones or their components. IFA 2018 was no exception, although something important for the mobile market was also demonstrated there.

The first mobile system on a chip, built on a 7 nm process

As many predicted, Huawei was the first to show the 7nm" mobile processor " Kirin 980. Moreover, the Chinese managed to become the first on many fronts at once:

The first processor based on Cortex-A76 cores The first "dual" neural processing unit (NPU)The first graphics accelerator Mali-g76the first Cat.21 modem with a bandwidth of 1.4 Gbit/s.The first chip that supports LPDDR4X memory with a frequency of 2133 MHz debuts the chip in the Huawei Mate 20, which will be shown in early October. That's when we'll know what he's capable of.

The U and Y series processors from INTEL are not an update, but an addition to the line of the eighth generation of processors. The chips are based on the Kaby Lake architecture, are manufactured according to the 14++ nm process technology and are positioned as energy-efficient. They will be used in ultrabooks and tablets.

As you may know, Qualcomm has also entered this market in partnership with AMD. The company plans to always use LTE modules, which will make not only compact, but all portable devices able to go online at any time.

The new Intel chips are a kind of Qualcomm's answer, because they have a 4G LTE modem for high-speed mobile communication. Y-processors can be used in very thin and light tablets.

Sony Xperia XZ3

The new flagship of Sony was one of the few presented at IFA 2018, and to some extent it really deserves attention.

The smartphone uses a curved OLED display with a ratio of 18:9 (but without a visor) and the Always-On Display function.

Side Sense is a gesture system for calling certain functions by tapping on the curved screen. At the back, there is only one 19 MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture, shooting Full HD video at 960 frames per second.

The smartphone will be the first on the market to come pre-installed with Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Minimum laptop frames

Laptops have traditionally shown a lot: Asus, Acer, Lenovo and others.

Small frames. This trend was present before, but much faster it still took the minds of smartphone manufacturers. Now, as The Verge noted, IFA 2018 has also killed the frames around laptop screens. And that's fine. In fact, the 14-inch models are now more similar in size to the 13-inch ones.

New trend-sliders?

Honor presented a new generation of the fairly popular smartphone Honor Magic 2. Despite the fact that the presentation was held in the open, not so many photos got to the network. But the main thing is known — the form factor of the device will resemble the previously popular sliders.

So, on the front panel there will be only a screen and a speaker, and the front camera and other sensors will go out with the back panel. And if the OPPO appeared only a small block, then the Honor Play 2 is responsible for all the back half of the device.

Following this, it turned out that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is almost the same, and even Lenovo joined in the general celebration.

HTC U12 Life, Motorola One and One Power, Huawei Mate 20 Litethe most budget smartphone from the Huawei Mate 20 Lite line began to be sold in Poland a couple of days before IFA, but it was at the exhibition that it was officially presented. 6.3-inch visor display, Kirin 970, 20+2 MP camera and 24 MP front-facing camera. All this for 30,000 rubles.

Motorola introduced its smartphones during the IFA, but did so with the help of a regular blog post. 5.9-inch and 6.2-inch smartphones with Snapdragon 625 and 636 processors, 4 GB of RAM and pure Android. Oh, yes, the One Power has a 5000 mAh battery compared to the 3000 mAh of the regular version. Otherwise, the devices are very nondescript.

HTC U12 Life turned out to be quite pleasant in appearance, but extremely unprofitable, given the price-performance ratio of the smartphone. Just a Snapdragon 636, 6-inch Full HD + screen (but without a visor) 5+16 MP camera and 3600 mAh. The back panel is original, but it does not justify the price tag of almost 27,000 rubles.

Wearable smartphonAn especially well-known manufacturer Nubia has introduced the device Nubia alpha (Nubia Alpha). It's a cross between a smart watch and a smartphone.

We have a flexible screen, a camera, a hardware button, and a linked strap. Although the company did not even bring a prototype to the exhibition, it assured that at the end of the year the device can be purchased.
