The best RPGs of 2018 on iOS and Android: from Harry Potter to Neverwinter Nights

Role-playing games are changing. If the PC still continues to come out and enjoy the popularity of RPG with an emphasis on pumping and complex plot, then on mobile it rarely works. Mobile users need gameplay, preferably dynamic and addictive. They don't have time to read the dialogues and make tactical pauses.

Ports and compromises save you.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

A very controversial game. Like most large projects, the main reason for its inconsistency is monetization. Instead of plunging into the world of witchcraft and wizardry, you need to think about how to make the planned actions before you run out of energy (or invest money).

On the other hand, this is the first full-fledged RPG based on "Harry Potter", and it is impossible to miss. Where else will you have the opportunity to go to magic classes, learn spells, get magical pets, and do all the things that an entire generation has grown up on? So far, only in Hogwars Mystery.

Battleheart 2

The original game gathered a large player base around it. Battleheart Legacy tried to change the genre and become an action RPG, and, although it was a good game, it alienated some representatives of this loyal base from the developer studio.

Therefore, a full-fledged sequel to Mika Mobile was released in the form of a fan-favorite turn-based RPG with unique characters, leveling, single and multiplayer modes and a recognizable picture.

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition

The console-based Final Fantasy XV went through a real production hell, but still got to the players. Pocket Edition is not a free collectible RPG based on the theme, but a full-fledged role-playing adventure with simplified graphics.

Unlike the original FF XV, there is no open world and many additional quests. But the main storyline is retold almost unchanged, being divided into 10 chapters. In the Pocket Edition, even the sound design and voice-over of dialogues have been preserved. Gameplay-wise, this is also a simplified but decent mobile action RPG.

Evoland 2

The original Evoland is a project created as part of a competition in 24 hours. Its essence lies in the fact that along with the story of the main character, the process of development of the entire RPG genre is revealed.

So, we start with an 8-bit two-dimensional RPG and finish with a full-fledged three-dimensional action RPG with elements of a fighting game, shooter and card game.

The sequel is all the same, but better and bigger.

Notable Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind-narrative elements; automatic saves; built-in note-taking tool; procedurally generated content; 400 interactive scenes; 480,000 words of script; multiple difficulty levels; stunning hand-drawn graphics. As often happens, the hope of other games to take higher places in this top evaporated at the end of the year, when the studio Beamdog released on Android a port of the cult role-playing game Neverwinter Nights.

This is a classic RPG created by BioWare. It is based on the rules of Dungeon & Dragons. Even if it did not become the same masterpiece as Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale, it is still a head above the other role-playing games of this year.
